What Nurse Practitioners Do   Who Are Nurse Practitioners?  Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are highly trained, experienced nurses who have completed advanced university study (Master’s level) and are endorsed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. They work as independent clinicians and are recognised as senior healthcare providers.  NPs combine the nursing focus on holistic, personcentred care with advanced clinical skills traditionally associated with doctors.  What Can Nurse Practitioners Help You With?  1. Assessing and Diagnosing Health Conditions  NPs can:  ∙Take a full medical history ∙Perform physical examinations ∙Order and interpret tests such as blood tests, Xrays, and ultrasounds ∙Diagnose a wide range of acute and chronic conditions  2. Prescribing Medications  NPs are authorised to prescribe many medications under Australian law, including:  ∙Antibiotics ∙Pain relief ∙Chronic disease medications ∙Mental health medications  They follow the same safety standards and prescribing regulations as doctors.  3. Ordering Tests and Referrals  NPs can:  ∙Order pathology and imaging ∙Refer you to medical specialists ∙Refer you to allied health providers (e.g., physiotherapy, psychology, podiatry)  4. Providing Treatment and Procedures  Depending on their area of expertise, NPs may perform:  ∙Wound care and suturing ∙Vaccinations ∙Chronic disease management ∙Sexual and reproductive health care ∙Mental health assessments ∙Minor procedures  5. Ongoing Management of Chronic Conditions  NPs often support patients with:  ∙Diabetes ∙Asthma and COPD ∙Heart disease ∙Hypertension ∙Mental health conditions ∙Pain management  They work closely with GPs and other clinicians to ensure coordinated care.  How Do Nurse Practitioners Work With Doctors?  NPs work collaboratively with GPs, specialists, and other health professionals. They can manage many health issues independently, but will consult or refer to a doctor when needed.
