LATEST NEWS

RSV Vaccine

From 3rd Feb 2025, eligible pregnant women will be able to receive the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine for free under the National Immunisation Program (NIP).

The RSV vaccine is recommended for women at 28 to 36 weeks of pregnancy and it protects their newborn from RSV.

RSV is a serious disease for newborn babies and it infects their nose, throat, and lungs. It is a leading cause of children going to hospital. Getting a vaccine in pregnancy reduces the risk of severe RSV disease in infants less than 6 months of age by about 70%.

Infant immunisation

There will be a RSV vaccination available for infants whose mothers did not receive the RSV vaccine during pregnancy.  The program will run from 1 April to 30 September 2025.

Under the new program, a free long-acting RSV monoclonal antibody, Beyfortus™ (nirsevimab), will be offered to eligible infants and young children.

Eligible infants are

Infants born from 1 October 2024 – 31 March 2025:

  • (Up to 8 months of age only) to mothers who did not receive maternal RSV vaccine during pregnancy, or where maternal RSV vaccine was administered 2 weeks before birth, or
  • with risk conditions for severe RSV disease (Australian Immunisation Handbook) regardless of maternal vaccination.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders infants born after the 1st October 2023
